Liquid Biopsy Matches Medicine to the Cancer
Liquid Biopsy Matches Medicine to the Cancer Liquid Biopsy Matches Medicine to the Cancer Liquid Biopsy Matches Medicine to the CancerWhile Mayo Clinic physicians have about 30 different drugs available to them to slow prostate cancers progression, matching patient to therapy is far from a one-size-fits-all solution. But Mayo physicians hope that will soon change.Right now, doctors determine the medication that will work the best against a particular patients prostate cancer, administer the drug, and continue to test to see if its working. Even when a therapy works, ongoing tests are still needed to ensure tumors havent mutated and to make the medicine ineffective.Clinicians wanted an easy test patients take every day, with minimal pain, and get quick results. Based on the biomarkers tumors shed in the blood, patients could tell if their current medical regime was working, if they needed to try another medication and, if so, which one would work best against their particular prostate cancer biomarkers. So Mayo researchers are collaborating on research that would use biomarkers shed in blood along with nanotechnology to characterize tumors and monitor how they grow.In response, researchers are developing noninvasive genomic liquid biopsies. The patient would use a finger stick to collect a drop of blood into a cartridge that would be mailed to the laboratory, says Brian Cunningham, professor of electrical and computer engineering, bioengineering at the University of Illinois.Assistant Professor Andrew Smith, left, and post-doctoral student Sung Jun Lim at work on cancer-detection technology. Image University of IllinoisThe schools Macro and Nanotechnology Laboratory, which Cunningham directs, and its Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology are collaborating with the Mayo Clinic on the project.Perhaps the greatest advantage is that monitoring could be done daily via a simple blood test that could be done at health clinics or diagnostics labs or even at home, Cu nningham says.Doctors usually take MRIs or other imaging tests several months after a drug therapy has started, to see if tumors or growing or shrinking in response. Why wait six months after patients start a drug to take an MRI leumund to measure tumors, when you could find out if a drug is working so much sooner? Cunningham says.Doctors would like to draw a sample from the patient every day when they start undergoing chemo to watch biomarker levels and see how they change from one day to the next, he adds. If the treatment is being successful, theyll see biomarker levels go down.Testing could be done inexpensively on a desktop-sized instrument that might cost several thousand dollars, he adds. The equipment would be used to look for biomarker molecules known as micro and messenger RNA that tumors shed in the blood of cancer patients. Scientists have only recently been able to test for RNA in the blood, and the accuracy has been poor, Cunningham says. The University of Illinois techn ique improves that accuracy with nanoparticles, he adds. There may be only 500 to 1,000 of these molecules present in a drop of blood, so being able to identify them requires ultra-sensitive detection approaches, Cunningham says.If we have 30 different messenger RNA sequences were looking to detect, we can see the molecules weve collected and count and differentiate them all within a single test, he adds. But how to identify those molecules?Another university researcher, Andrew Smith, is at work on methods to call out the molecules by binding them with the surfaces of nanoparticles, specifically semiconductor quantum dots that are extremely bright and thus highlight the messenger RNA. A photonic crystal attached to the dot amplifies the RNA signal. Smith is assistant professor of bioengineering at the universitys Micro and Nanotechnology Lab.With the dots, we can see the molecules we collect, he says. The nanoparticles used are so bright they act as tiny little flashlights. After the p atients messenger RNA is separated from other components of their blood sample, technicians use an enzymatic method to place biotin on that messenger RNA. The quantum dot is attached to the biotin. Then images are taken. If you look in a microscope you can literally see individual molecules, Cunningham says. You see them on a cell phone camera if you have the microscope lens attached. The nanoparticle-tagged molecules would be counted and separated via signal-to-noise ratio, which compares the level of a desired signalfrom the semiconductorto the level of background noise. The number of amount of a particular sequence within the sample would let doctors know whether tumors are sloughing off more materiali.e. growingor lessshrinking. They can then choose to maintain the current medical regime or choose another one.Currently the liquid biopsy method is under trial at the Mayo Clinic. At the same time, the researchers are creating a simple microfluidics device that would allow the method to be used for quick, accurate diagnosis. The device could be available to physicians within five years, depending on FDA trials and tests, he says.Jean Thilmany is an independent writer For Further Discussion With the dots, we can see the molecules we collect, he says. The nanoparticles used are so bright they act as tiny little flashlights.Prof. Andrew Smith, University of Illinois

Thinking were being paid fairly matters more than making a fair wage
Thinking were being paid fairly matters mora than making a fair wageThinking were being paid fairly matters more than making a fair wageHow you feel about how your company pays you matters much more than the hard numbers of your paycheck, according to anew survey of more than 500,000 employeesby the salary databasePayScale. The survey found that employees believing they had a fair and transparent pay process had 5.4 times the impact on how satisfied employees felt at their company, compared to whether the employee was actually being paid at market value for their role.In other words, were much more sensitive to why and how were being paid than what were being paid. Why fair and transparent salaries are so importantWhy does so-and-so get paid more than I do? How do raises happen on my team? When employees know the answers to these questions, they feel like they have more agency over their careers. As any highly paid yet miserable employee recognizes, the zeroes in our paychecks dont comfo rt us as much as feeling appreciated and valued by our employers. Our study shows that just by having an open dialogue about the pay process and employees contributions at the company, employers can ultimately drive better outcomes for their businesses,Lydia Frank, PayScales Vice President of Content Strategy said.We often dont know if were fairly paidAnd the survey found that we could use all the help we can get with clarifying pay processes, because many of us are bad at estimating if were being paid fairly. Of the people the survey found were being underpaid at their jobs, almost 90% thought they were paid at or above market rate. What companies should knowBeing transparent about pay doesnt just keep employees engaged at work - it helps to ensure that they are being compensated equally. Advocates of closing the gender gemeinsame agrarpolitik argue that being transparent about pay is key to stopping the persistent gap between mens and womens salaries. When your company conducts reg ular pay audits, they can change behaviors and stop unconscious biases between teams. This study shows us that we care more about processes more than results when it comes to our salaries. To keep us engaged at work, employersdont just need to have the right answers, they need to show the rest of the class how they got to that number.

This Wacky Cover Letter Scored Me My Dream Job
This Wacky Cover Letter Scored Me My Dream JobThis Wacky Cover Letter Scored Me My Dream Job If tzu siches one way to make a recruiter yawn, its submitting a dry, dull cover letter thats essentially a reworked version of your resume. Your cover letter shouldnt just be a list of your skills and experience - its an opportunity to highlight who you are as a person, and what makes you different from all of the other candidates who are vying for the same position as you. You want to strike the right balance between professional, passionate, and creative . But what does that actually look like on paper?Kaitlin Westbrook, a content writer and digital marketer at Eezy.com , seems to have struck just the right balance. Rather than a traditional cover letter, she applied for her current position with a cover letter formatted to look like a clickbait article, sensational headline and all. While we cant guarantee this is the right approach for every job opening out there, it certainly welches for Westbrook - not long after she submitted her cover letter, she scored her dream job.We reached out to Westbrook to hear her take on why she thinks her approach worked so well, what she learned from it, and what advice she has for other job seekers trying to catch the attention of recruiters and hiring managers .Glassdoor Can you tell us a little bit about your background?Kaitlin Westbrook I do content writing and marketing at Vecteezy , an online tech startup that provides resources for graphic designers and other creatives. When I applied for my position with Vecteezy, I welchesnt in the best place. I was doing contract work as a customer service representative, and because it was contract work, I knew it wasnt going to last forever. I was ready to pursue something that utilized my strengths in a way my current job didnt.Long story short, I was applying for a lot of things that didnt seem to pan out. Meanwhile, my contract was about to end soon, and I was worrying about rent and bills and where my future paychecks would come from. Then, an illustrator friend posted a Vecteezy position on Facebook. I knew right away I wanted it, but I wasnt sure what the best plan of action would be.Glassdoor How did you come up with the idea for a clickbait cover letter?Kaitlin Westbrook Like any younger sibling, I called up my older sister to ask for advice. Shes an art director, so shes always asking, How can you do this more creatively? So, we started discussing my cover letter, brainstorming different ideas on how to make it stand out. I wanted a writing job , so we broke it down write a cover letter that advertises writing. Instead of a typical cover letter, I wrote clickbaiton why the company should hire me. Once I wrote it, I submitted it and hoped I hadnt made a mistake.Glassdoor Submitting a cover letter like this is definitely a leap of faith. Why do you think it worked so well?Kaitlin Westbrook I was applying for a senior level posit ion with only some copywriting experience under my belt. So, while I really wasnt qualified for a senior level position, I think the company saw I really wanted to work for them and that I was willing to hustle. ??With that in mind, they were able to offer me a content writing position that also involved marketing. I honestly think they appreciated seeing someone with drive.Glassdoor I also saw that you pointed out a grammatical error in your cover letter - thats pretty gutsyKaitlin Westbrook The job listing required me to point out a grammatical error and include my favorite food in the cover letter. (I would never correct someones job listing otherwise) ??I really tried to go above and beyond, and I think that showed.Glassdoor What advice would you give to job seekers looking to spice up their cover letters?Kaitlin Westbrook This experience taught me professional risks can be worth it. Employers want professionalism and creativity, so its certainly a balancing act, but I woul d definitely try it again. I would encourage job-seekers to consider how they can be professional and mucksmuschenstill take risks, whether its in the cover letter, the resume, or something else. The right place will appreciate the creativity.
